See you there!

-------------

Saw Coraline at an industry screening last night in LA, and OMFG is it beautiful. I wanted to see it again as soon as the credits rolled. Everything worked: The story, the images, the music, and yes, the 3D. I wish I was a 9 year-old again so that I could have my brain completely re-wired by this movie; as it was, my neurons certainly got a vigorous workout. I've never seen or experienced anything quite like it and, most tellingly, I can't stop thinking about it.

[Edits: 1-Check out Ivy's MUCH more comprehensive write-up here. 2-Needless to say, we do know people involved in the production, but I would have loved it to pieces anyway. 3-Don't sit too close; the 3D and animation can be a little jarring from the front row; about 1/3 back ought to do it.]

What do you think about this? I think my suggestion came across as more radical than I'd intended, but it's resulting in an interesting discussion.

Scott, why oh why didn't DC Comics ask YOU to do the graphic novel of Captain Marvel, instead of Jeff Smith? Now don't get me wrong. I respect the heck out of Jeff Smith's success with "Bone". But let's face it...he's not a superior artist. He has glaring weaknesses that come to light when he tries to draw anything other than "Bone". I mean he definitely can't draw kids. His drawings of Billy Batson are awful. He labors to draw a "realistic" human, then tries to make it childlike by making the head huge and the body tiny. The result is that the kid looks like a dwarf! Big head, shrunken body...we're talking Lollipop Guild here! And as for little Mary Marvel in that drawing he did of her for the novel's back cover...she looks like *gulp* Chucky. Well, she does! Go and look!

And he's no better with Tawny the Talking Tiger. The tiger's face changes from panel to panel, and not through emoting. The sad fact is that Smith just doesn't have the skill to draw convincing realistic human beings (or animals) OR the skill to stylize them to make them easier to draw and more attractive to the eye. You did a great job with the characters in "Zot", and furthermore, you're the better storyteller. I would have loved to what you could have done with The Big Red Cheese. What a waste, what a bummer, what a lost opportunity...
